The Rotary Club of Chippenham Wiltshire Vale has donated £500 to Wellboring, a Wiltshire based charity that has provided a clean water supply for over 20 schools in rural Kenya, mainly in Kisumu County. The charity has the aim of helping 100 schools by 2020, transforming the lives of 100,000 people.
They started from a leadership perspective and set up “Water Workshops” with the leaders of local schools who had or were getting a well, supporting those who desperately needed a clean water supply. The schools are encouraged to share water with local farmers and neighbours.
Sickness in schools falls from 20% to 2 % with diseases like cholera and typhoid disappearing from the area. Children spend more time learning instead of fetching water from often polluted rivers.
Schools are targeted by Wellboring because in most rural communities the school is the only public building and children are particularly susceptible to water born diseases.
The cost for each water pump plus drilling is £4,000 and the well should last for decades.
