Two Rotarian sisters from the Trowbridge area, are working together to organise a flower festival in Melksham, Wiltshire, to celebrate 100 years of Rotary Foundation.
Sarah Hiscocks, Secretary and Immediate Past President of Melksham Rotary and Caroline Christopher, Chairman of Melksham and District Flower Arrangement Society and member of Trowbridge Wessex Mead Rotary club, were at the Rotary of Britain and Ireland conference in 2016, when Past District Governor Eric Sambell suggested that it would be great if they did something together with their two Melksham clubs. Several years ago, the MDFAS put on a very successful flower festival at St Michaels church in Melksham and so the idea was born.
Melksham Rotary agreed to pay for the flowers, MDFAS agreed to make over 20 arrangements depicting key Rotary Foundation principles including Polio Plus. Eric, on behalf of Chippenham Male Voice choir, suggested a concert in the church amongst the flowers for the Saturday evening.
The Flower festival will start on Friday 12 May at 1pm until 5pm. St Michaels Church, Melksham will be open for all to see. St Michaels Church members will offer refreshments to those who visit during the festival. It will continue into Saturday 13 May, from 10am – 4pm, and after the church service on Sunday 14t May from 1pm – 4pm. Entry to see the flowers will be free, though there will be donation buckets. The concert by Chippenham Male Voice Choir will take place in the church on Saturday 13 May from 7:30pm with the ticket price of £5 per person. All moneys raised at the concert and the donations will go to Rotary Foundation. Refreshments at the concert will be available from Melksham Rotary’s own ArtHouse café volunteers.
